Ebike throttle cutting out

EBike Throttle(review modification)

A typical ECU electronic control unit for an E-bike. Most have even more wires and connectors. As I continue on with this guide to finding the problem with your E-bike, let me say that it is important that you read Part 1 that I published last week. The notes about safety, knowing if you should do this on your own, and the sequence of tests are all part of this post.

So, you have tested or replaced your battery and the lights on your panel are still not on. The next step is to check that you are getting that power to the ECU electronic control unit. It is normally located in the frame or rack and is not that hard to gain access to. Note how it and the wires are tucked in to the compartment before and as you pull it out of its hiding place.

Use the voltmeter to confirm the correct voltage is being delivered to it. There is a possibility of a broken wire or a bad connection between the battery and ECU. Look for signs of overheated wires at the connectors, that is a sure sign of trouble. There is also a chance that the handlebar mounted display is faulty, but I rarely find this to be the case. At this point you can use the meter to check the brake safety cut-out switches for correct operation. Also, you can check the throttle control for the correct signal it should send to the ECU.

A wiring diagram can be quite helpful at this stage of the testing.

Make sure to power off the bike and disconnect the wires at the ECU during these tests. The brake switches will be a simple continuity test, while the throttle test is different. If none of these tests show a bad component, then you can assume the ECU is bad. Once again, an exact replacement unit is the best. Chances are you have a bad ECU or motor. There are a few other things that it could be, but on most bikes you will find one of these two items are the culprit.

On a true pedelec bike no throttleor an intelligent pedelec bike with a load sensor hooked to the pedals or rear drop-outthe testing could be beyond the scope of this article.

On those bikes, I strongly suggest you have a factory trained tech do your troubleshooting and repair. At minimum, talk to one on the phone to guide you. True pedelecs use a hall sensor on the bottom bracket to trigger the motor.

These are not too complicated. An intelligent pedelec uses a computer and sensitive load sensor that can be quite complicated. Here are a few tips on deciding if your motor or ECU is the bad guy.

Throttle quickly the power cuts off, help pleas :AM. I finally managed to get my bike together : Yesterday I was out on a short test ride. I drove both fast and slow and everything worked perfectly and I was really happy. But today when I took the bike out of the garage to go for a ride, it did not work well anymore. It's no problem to ride away and everything works as it should until I throttle quickly the power cuts off If I go easy on the throttle the bike will power up to full speed.

The power don't die completely,What happens is that the power disappears and the battery icon starts flashing like the battery was out. After about seconds, everything returns to normal, until i I throttle quickly next time.

What could be the problem? Tags: None. My guess is the motor may be drawing more current than the BMS or the motor cobtriller feel it is safe. They likely detect a voltage drop below some limit or the temp sensor is faulty or too sensitive and reduce power. Before your second ride, did you fully charge your battery? If not, fully charge the battery again and immediately after the charge competes ride and see how it works.

Is your pack charged to If lower, you likely have some cells that are not fully charged and need to be balanced. If that is the case, avoid full throttle and full discharge until you balance the pack and determine it has no issues. Comment Post Cancel. A poor connection in the main power cables, such as a dry solder joint or weak crimp, it a partly connected connector, could cause low voltage under load, too.

Fabrication is fun! Build something today. Show someone. Let them help. Inspire and share. Spread the desire. First, I would like to thank you for taking the time to help me, much appreciated.

I recharged the battery again to After the visit i I turned on the bike and drove home 5 min everything still worked prefect. Then it became the same problem again after standing in the garage overnight. Feels almost like something wrong happens with the battery when it is not used for a few hours. Kind regards Johan.

I had a similar problem, under no load and minimal throttle it would spin all day. As soon as I went to half throttle it would cut out and have a error code.

I would disconnect the battery and the code would disappear and the same thing would happen. Not all E-bikes have safety motor cut-off switches on the hand brakes. A broken wire here, binding lever or bad switch can keep your motor from running. Modern E-bikes are designed to be problem-free.

Of course they still need the standard bicycle maintenance you would expect. It should go without saying that the only way to know if it is having a problem, is to know how it normally works. So as you ride your E-bike, pay attention to how the controls and indicator lights operate during regular use. This will be part of the key to troubleshooting any problems you may encounter.

If trouble arises, make a mental or written note of each thing that seems different or wrong. Whether you attempt the repairs yourself or have a E-bike mechanic take care of it, the list of things you notice can be a road map to help solving the problem. I do recommend having a qualified mechanic do the troubleshooting and repair. The manufacture will do everything they can to help you over the phone or email, and they too will need an idea of the maladies.

So make that list. If the bike is still under warrantee, they will ship out the needed parts free. They might suggest you send them the whole bike for the fix. The electric-assist system consists of several parts. The motor, battery, charger, control unit, wiring harness, and all the input devices need to work as a team for correct operation. Each and every item needs to be correctly plugged in and functioning right.

Your problem could be as simple as a loose wiring connection, or at its worst, a failed component. Our first goal before the repair, is to decide what to repair.

Before you start this process, remember that safety is the most important tool in your workshop. Keep your common sense in top gear and think before you leap. On the subject of thinking, it is so important to stay sharp during all your tests and repairs. Look for the obvious things first. Broken or loose wires can be visible, although sometimes they can be in a hidden spot.

A battery that is not fully inserted or plugged in is a quick fix. A throttle unit that feels mechanically broken when you turn it should make you think that is the problem. A smell or excess heat from the control unit or motor is a tell-tale sign to suspect that component.Forums New posts Search forums.

Thread starter DennisM Start date Jun 9, DennisM New Member. Newbie here.

Thanks for the addition to the forum. I have a new to us Radmini also a Radrover with miles on it. On my wife's Radmini the power keeps cutting out regardless if its in throttle mode or PAS. I have pulled all the connections apart, cleaned male and female ends of the terminals, removed the controller and cleaned those connectors.

I have the bike upside down and noticed that when i use full throttle, I'm getting maybe a third throttle. I did the same to my Radrover and it did full throttle. The battery has a full charge and I cleaned those connections too. Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks in advance. AHicks Well-Known Member. Time to get the multi meter out! Start at the battery and trace the power flow to see where it stops.

Is there power available at the battery connection? Likely a long shot, but there are some connections internal to the battery. The on-off switch, the connections at the fuse sand the fuses themselves are some that come to mind. I hit a bump with my 8 month old bike one day, causing a total power failure, that causing a 2 mile walk home.

All up hill in blistering hot weather. Anyway, that was traced to the battery switch which I never used anyway. That switch is now bypassed and will never give me trouble again This was the second time the bike had a power failure.

The first I had the bike upside down and it just started working again.

I hate erratic stuff like this, as you can only work on it when it's dead! AHicks, thank you for the reply. Out comes the darn multimeter. Those pins are like microscopic, oh well, nothing better to do, huh? Fuses you say? I did see 2 on the back of the battery case, start there.Login or Sign Up. Bike cut off. Posts Latest Activity. When I'm riding my bike and I give it throttle suddenly the battery indicator comes on and the whole thing shuts.

How come it does that? This is the motor and display and controller I have. Tags: None. What are the specifications of your battery? What is the max current on your BMS if you have one? That kit has the potential to draw a lot of power.

It could be causing enough voltage sag to hit the low voltage cutoff threshold on the controller. Definitely need more info to see the full picture.

Pulling you and a bike up to speed presents a load to the motor and requires a lot more power than spinning a hub motor off of the ground. That is why I suspect it may be that your BMS or battery are not up to the task. Comment Post Cancel. Electricbiker commented. The battery I have is a 72v 26a battery. I'm not sure what the bms is I'm not sure if I figured out the problem if so it's a bit embarrassing. Take a look at the picture below, that's a picture of my display.

To the left you see the battery indicator which is yellow, and below it the voltage Now what I noticed is that when giving it throttle the battery indicator fluctuates with the throttle rather than giving me a idea of how much percent is remaining like what you see on your phone.

And below that is the voltage as I mentioned. So I happened to watch a video of someone else building ae bike and he said when it's full charge hoc it will say it's about 84v and when it's low charge it will say it's 60 something volts So do you mean to tell me that 69v on the indicator means that it's dead? If so it's obviously very misinformative. I mean I did floor it quiet a bit and do a few burnouts but I didn't think it was dead just yet I'm charging now to figure out for sure.

Try giving a full charge and then seeing if it gives you these problems hot off the charger.

You can email the seller and ask this figure; you should make a note of this default controller LVC. I imagine that there is also an LVC setting in the display--what is it? After it dies, try power cycling the battery by unplugging it, waiting a few seconds, and then plugging it back in. When you trip the circuit breaker in the BMS, power cycling the battery resets it.

After that, try drawing less current and see if it rides okay at those lower power levels.

When a battery is in need of charging, it is unable to deliver the same amount of current as when it is fully charged.Login or Sign Up. This is a sticky topic. Posts Latest Activity. Page of 3. I would be glad if anyone would try and confirm it works as intended on the new problematic BBSHD controller. It behaved as intended when cranking the arms manually on my test bed So this what I have done: 1. Set throttle mode to: Current 4. Set designated assist level on pedal assist page to: 0 5. Set designated assist level on throttle page to: 9 Edit: Accoding to AZguy below it seems to be possible to have multiple levels of thottle by setting current limits on assist 1 - 9 and setting designated assist to "by displays command" on throttle page.

Program and try out. Anyone willing to try and confirm? Maybe this has been posted before but if so I was unable to find it Last edited by dn9 ;AM.

Tags: None. Very, very interesting. I wasn't even going to bother trying this - I didn't see how this would work. It's all about the throttle but you can pedal and still have that lusciously smooth throttle while still pedaling. Changing the PAS level makes no difference and if you don't touch the throttle you get no power while pedaling.

The throttle just ignores whether or not you are pedaling and gives the throttle-only response.

I think this is pretty much the same as cutting the PAS cadence sensor wire. This means that you can push a lever and ride your bicycle without pedaling. You can engage the electric motor by twist throttles or thumb throttles. There are a few situations where you'd want this feature.

Magnum Premium 48a folding ebike, has a trigger throttle. On a long recreational ride or a road ride, there's going to be times when you get really tired and you don't want to pedal. Maybe you're feeling ill.

Maybe it's the end of a long day. You may be miles away from your car or home. On a conventional bike, you've got to dig in and keep pedaling. But with a pedal-free throttle power bikeyou can get back home and rest. Sometimes it's just fun to cruise. Sometimes you want to go really fast, or jump rocks, and you just don't want to be distracted by the effort necessary when pedaling.

You're going to drain your battery pretty quickly when you use the throttle. So you want to be judicious about when you use this awesome function.

Some electric powered bikes only have a throttle. Some have pedal-assist and a pedal-free throttle. Many of our e bikes either come with a throttle or a throttle can be added. Check out our end of year clearance! Visit and Test Ride Today.
